Sci-fi and Horror

The Yesterday Machine

The Yesterday Machine is not a classic, although it can be said to be a classic, of its type. The acting is wooden, the plot implausible, the script is dire and the direction almost non existent. What’s not to love? Grab some popcorn, turn your phone off, and glory in the very enjoyable hokum that is The Yesterday Machine!

First Spaceship on Venus

A product of the Soviet Bloc in 1960 this German/Polish film this film has a cult following. You can say that the science is almost all wrong (it is), that the dubbing is dreadful (it is), and that the acting is not good (it isn’t) However, and it’s a big however, it is great fun! It is also interesting to see what was inspiring the kids behind the Iron Curtain in the 1950s.

The Night of the Living Dead

A low budget film that spawned a whole genre and has become part of the history of film making. The fact that it was a low budget production helped create the feeling of the film and so create this horror genre.

The House on Haunted Hill

Made in 1959 it has all the components of a ’50s horror film, a haunted house, a murderer, and – of course – a pit filled with acid in the basement! This film really should be better known!

Film Noir

D.O.A.

D.O.A. (1950) is a film noir drama directed by Rudolph Maté that is widely regarded as a classic of the genre. The fast-paced plot centres on a condemned man’s mission to discover who poisoned him — and why – before he perishes. It also includes what has been called “probably one of cinema’s most inventive opening sequences.”

Vintage Silent Greats

La Voyage dans La Luna.

Vintage silent classic from 1902.
